San Donato Milanese (Milan), May 11, 2022 - Today, Eni Company published «Eni 2021 - Fair Transition», the 16th Voluntary Report on Sustainable Development, which outlines the company’s contribution and objectives to a fair energy transition to highlight social and economic outcomes towards carbon neutrality by 2050.
We in Eni are firmly committed to contributing to the achievement of universal access to energy by supporting the development of the countries in which we operate and by contributing to the achievement of the highest objectives of the Paris Agreement. This commitment is even more important today in the light of the war in Ukraine, at a historic moment when it is necessary to unite even more, avoiding differences, striving for the common good and stepping up efforts to ensure Europe’s energy security, speeding up the process of decarbonization», said Chief Executive Officer Eni Claudio Descalzi.
These ideas are discussed in detail in the report, which is supplemented by the reports «Eni 2021 - Carbon Neutrality by 2050» on the strategies and main climate goals of Ani, as well as «Eni 2021 - Indicators of sustainable development», which provides an overview of environmental, social and management indicators of the company.
In particular, with regard to the Carbon Neutral Strategy by 2050, Eni has stepped up its targets by announcing net emissions reductions of 35 per cent in scope 1, 2 and 3 by 2030 and 80 per cent in 2018 levels by 2040 (compared to -25% and -65% in the previous plan). With regard to net emissions with coverage levels of 1 and 2, the company will reach -40% by 2025 (compared to 2018) and net zero emissions by 2035, five years ahead of the previous plan. It will also increase the share of investment in new energy solutions to 30% by 2025, to 60% by 2030 and 80% by 2040.
In achieving the goals of decarbonization, more attention is paid to the concept of «equitable transition», namely addressing the impact of energy transformation on people, from workers, whether directly involved in these projects, to the population and service recipients. The report provides an overview of the projects and initiatives undertaken by Eni to ensure a fair transition. Projects and initiatives are part of the evolution of the company’s activities, which include the conversion of refineries into bio-refineries, forest conservation projects, the development of renewable energy sources and the establishment of agro-centres to supply raw materials for bio-refineriesA refinery, job creation and support for the development of new activities in the countries where the company is present.
Eni has also strengthened its partnership with international organizations for joint efforts. Major community initiatives implemented in 2021 include activities aimed at improving access to water for the population of Basra, Iraq, through water treatment plants provided to Eny, economic diversification projects in the agricultural sector of Angola, Congo and Nigeria, as well as projects to support local and youth entrepreneurship in Egypt.
