Qazaq Green Fest will take place on May 25-26

Topic of the event: “Energy security of Kazakhstan: low-carbon transition”.

The problem of energy security is one of the most pressing in the light of global trends, geopolitical challenges and the current state of development of the electric power industry of Kazakhstan. More than 100 countries have declared their goals for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050-2060. Given the growing geopolitical confrontation, many countries around the world have accelerated the transformation of energy systems and the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. At the same time, Kazakhstan has faced a number of problems in the energy sector: the problem of shortage of electricity generation, the obsolescence of generating capacity, the growth of emergency shutdowns of equipment, the lack of maneuvering capacity, increasing dependence on flows from neighboring countries.

Within the framework of international obligations on climate change, Kazakhstan joined the Paris Agreement and set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% absolutely, and by 25% conditionally by 2030 in case of international support. Thus, the total greenhouse gas emissions of the country in 1990 amounted to 386 million tons of CO2, and in accordance with the commitments, by 2030, Kazakhstan must not exceed the level of emissions equal to 328 million tons of CO2.

In order to ensure the energy transition and the implementation of objectives for low-carbon development in February 2023, the Strategy for achieving carbon neutrality of Kazakhstan until 2060 was adopted, which involves the gradual reduction of dependence on coal-fired power generation in the country. In accordance with the task set by the Head of State, the share of renewable energy sources in the total generation of electricity by 2030 should reach 15%.
